“Longest lasting earbuds” can mean three different things: how many hours you get per charge, how many hours you get in total with the charging case, and how many years the battery keeps going. Check each number on its own before you compare pairs.
Number 1: hours per charge
This is how long you can listen before the earbuds go back in the case. SoundGuys says its battery tests found that, on average, earbuds last about 6.4 hours on a single charge.
SoundGuys also says earbud battery life in its tests tends to be within 10% of manufacturer claims, but usually falls a bit short. So expect real listening time to land at or slightly under the listed number.
If you listen for very long stretches, SoundGuys is blunt: “If you routinely use audio products for more than 8 hours a day, earbuds are a terrible fit for your life!”
Number 2: total hours with the case
Check whether a headline battery figure is a total that includes the charging case. EARSOLE’s Invisible Mini Sleep Earbuds Series 159 listing is an example: it says “Up to 24 Hours Battery Life”, then breaks that down as 4h for the earbud battery and 20h for the case battery.
According to the listing, then, the earbuds run for 4 hours at a time, and the other 20 hours come from recharging them in the case. The same listing says the case itself can be recharged in an hour.
When you compare listings, compare per-charge hours with per-charge hours and case totals with case totals.
Number 3: years before the battery fades
The third number is how many years the battery keeps working well. Wirecutter explains that every time you recharge your earbuds, they get a little less listening time.
Wirecutter’s example: earbuds that played music for five hours per charge when new may give only an hour of play time after a few years.
SoundGuys says you can typically expect earbud batteries to last about two to three years with heavy use, or 300-500 charge cycles.
Wirecutter adds that how long a battery lasts depends on how often you use your earbuds, how often you charge them and leave them plugged in, exposure to extreme temperatures, and how often you take calls or use active noise cancellation. It says the same pair that fails for one person after two years might last another person closer to four.
In a Reddit r/HeadphoneAdvice thread asking how long wireless earbuds should last, one user said their Anker buds generally last about 3-5 years while their higher-end brands usually push 3. Another said 3 years is around the upper limit if you use them for multiple hours every day.
How to make a pair last longer
SoundGuys and Wirecutter both give charging and storage habits:
- SoundGuys suggests only charging to 75 or 80% at maximum and never allowing a complete discharge.
- SoundGuys also suggests storing the earbuds in a cool, dry place whenever possible.
- Wirecutter says to keep your electronics at room temperature as often as possible.
- If you are setting a pair aside for a week or more, Wirecutter suggests checking the manual for storage instructions, and says the sweet spot for storing lithium batteries is often in the middle, charged between 30% and 70%.
When you shop, Wirecutter suggests noting how long the earbuds hold a charge. For how earbud and headphone pages state battery life in different units, see our earbuds vs headphones comparison. If one bud runs down before the other, see why one earbud battery drains faster.
